Remember last October when a tree fell on my house and little woodland creatures decided to move into my attic? Apparently I never caught them all. And now they’re breeding.
I dropped off this baby flying squirrel with my vet this morning. It will be handed off to a wildlife rehabilitator who will raise it until it’s old enough to release. Can’t help but wonder how many siblings are left to find . . .

That’s so weird. I’m doing a web site for an environmental group and they had a picture of a flying squirrel and I thought, “So that’s what they look like. Kinda chipmunky.” Then BOOM! you have a picture of a flying squirrel. I’m a little scared where I’ll see the third one.
Considering these things have litters, probably here again.
You are probably one of the few people who would trap a wild animal like this and give it to a wildlife rehabilitation person. That’s why you rock.
I’m not perfect. Usually I trap and release the squirrels (over 30 since last year), but there have been a couple times I let my cats in the attic and the squirrels didn’t make it out alive.
Awww. So nice you got to save a life! Two other things also came to mind (that have nothing to do with this probably): 1. I heard on This American Life about this woman who caught a few bedbugs and decided to lock them in a ziploc bag to see how long they could survive without food/water. Well, they bred. A lot. 2. If you have seen the Japanese animation Totoro, then I was somehow reminded of Kurosuke, the black soot living in the attic…
The bedbugs thing is going to give me nightmares. Gross.
I’m jealous of that baby flying squirrel’s graham cracker.
