Black & White

He studied the photo for a long time. He gave her a sheepish look. “Tell me what I’m looking at.”

She smiled. He sat beside her.

“This is the head. Here’s the forehead. Here’s the nose. This is the body. This is a leg. This is a hand.”

She was so certain. How had he missed all that? He took another long look at the picture.

“I don’t see anything.”

She squeezed his knee. “It’s a lot easier once you’ve seen it live on the screen. And it’s still early. It doesn’t look like much yet.”

She shifted her attention to something else, but he took another moment with the blurry image. He wished he could see what she saw. Even so, he knew he held something special. Somewhere in those mysterious black and white patches was his future.

I loved this. I work at an OBGYN office so I see this moment on a daily basis – you put it so beautifully.
